London-born Melbourne-based artist Tim Gleig tells his story by crafting custom leather shoes. Harnessing his inner obstacles to make something truly unique in the shoe game world.

Two Five Shoes made in Melbourne, with love from London. Every pair of two five shoes is handmade using a mixture of cordwaining techniques at their studio in Coburg North. They can do a lot in two weeks, like bring an idea to life, and that’s roughly how long it takes to make each pair.

Why this story?

I got a call from my previous partner while she was doing the rounds at Stay Soft Studio’s monthly market, she said “Shaki, you gotta come check these shoes out; they’re insane! You’ll love em” and so I made my first trip to the Stay Soft Studio Market at Collingwood Yards. There were heaps of cool stuff at the stalls, but the shoes at the Two Five stole the show, at least for me. Custom handmade leather designs, Vibram soles and pure craft infused into a shoe was the tip of the iceberg.

The more I dug deeper into the shoe, the more I was invested in knowing about Tim’s story, not to mention his infectious charisma - not in a salesman's pov but in like an actual mad dog kinda way. I said this is it; we’re covering a story on this! Melbourne needs to know more about these crazy handmade shoes and the mind behind them!

Jack de Bomford,
Director

" I was immediately inspired to create this film on Tim when I saw his craftsmanship for the first time. I knew there was a story there and I needed to share it.

The highlight of the project was getting to know Tim and becoming friends off camera, he’s such a genuine person and that really came through in our film."

Producer

"This HEATWAVES was a little different as it wasn’t just about the art or the vision it was about the tangible product and the journey the creator took to make it. I felt we replicated that mode of thinking with the crew, we were all striving to make something tangible, something you could touch and feel while viewing the video. We are all on own on filming journey but this crew was right place-right time to bring this product to life."

"The first location was Tim’s home and workshop. I was meeting some of the crew and Tim for the first time - I think Tim’s calmness and humour set the tone for the day (and ‘Beans’ the dog!). Seeing Tim’s workshop, with all of the classic machinery and tools he’d collected… showed how passionate he was about his craft. It was a really fun set to work on because we all really wanted to be there and lift each other up! Everyone crossed departments to help achieve the vision. There was a lot of laughing on the floor getting the bag angle and putting shaki in a trolley"

“I am passionate about supporting creatives and getting behind projects like HEATWAVES. When I arrived on set, I immediately knew this would be a project to remember. It was such a blast! One of the most memorable moments for me was when we all had to lie on the floor to get a crazy angle, and I couldn't help but notice the massive smiles on everyone's faces. Getting behind the project of Tim Gleig and supporting creatives is my mission in telling unique stories.”

Behind the Scenes

“I wanted to soak up some more knowledge from these insane brains.

My favourite moment on the project was watching Shaki rig unique camera angles up and watch these crazy shots come to life.

I’d love to share with people who have seen this project that it was the most fun crew ever. Always made things up on the spot, having a laugh, and we tried some awesome food in the local areas during our breaks!”

“After the first episode, it felt like a new challenge to continue the overarching style of the series whilst being tailored to each subject. I loved the different look we accomplished, which was still quite pushed, however, I leaned towards a more analog representation of the images. A memorable moment was speaking and collaborating with a different director. It was interesting to find a way to incorporate his own vision amongst the subject’s style whilst all falling under the heatwaves umbrella.”

"Sound mixing the Two Five Heatwaves was a blast. I was enthralled by the unique camerawork, attaching cameras to Tim’s limbs as he works on his shoes and rides around. Getting to heighten these striking perspectives and Tim’s craft through the sound was wild and very rewarding.”

"This is the project where I had a tremendous amount of fun editing, and I hope that enjoyment is reflected in this work. I loved everything about it: the characters, the story, the cinematography, the music, and the entire incredibly talented team. It granted me a lot of freedom for self-expression, which is crucial for me as an artist and isn't something I often find in commercial projects. I believe these kinds of projects are very important as they offer deserved recognition to creative people and inspire them to persevere."

Special Camera Grip

“On this project, I built the dolly rig for close-up moving shots from some spare materials and old tripod parts. Made what we had work to our advantage rather than blowing a huge budget. I loved that this was entirely independent. It took the time and skills of the people keen to do something. It didn't need to influence anyone other than the creators themselves. The fact that this is entirely independent doesn't mean it's small. There is nothing but the time of the creators giving every spare moment they have to achieve something of this scale. What you get to see is the result, but what you don't see is the dedication and persistence of the people. It's the passion of individual collaboration that gets these things up. It's no small feat.”
